Compliments and Copyrights

Posted by Delilah Young on 2nd Jun 2019

It is a compliment when a customer purchases my original painting.  Sometimes a friend, neighbor or family member sees this artwork in the customer's home, business, office or restaurant and comments that they would like one similar or identical to it.  That is also a compliment.  One time a  customer stated that she had reproduced a copy of my artwork but it did not turn out good. That is not a compliment. That is an infringement on the rights of the artist. When a customer purchases an original artwork or a print that does not mean that you have also purchased the copyright to reproduce that artwork to give away, sell, or manufacturer in any form, even if it is for a nonprofit organization. It is possible to purchase a copyright from the original artist , if the original artist so wishes. An agreement can be written up and signed if both parties decide to do this. It is also possible for the artist to receive a portion of the profit for each piece sold or sell several copies to an individual or shop that  the artist has created herself. Countless artists have sold copies of their prints for a price to a customer or shop and they have been resold in gift shops everywhere. These are signed and numbered prints and both parties  have agreed on the arrangement in a legal document.   I scan each  painting that I create, and document each painting and print. My paintings are signed and my prints are signed and numbered whether they are archival paper prints or giclee canvas prints.

As an artist, I, Delilah Young, am thereby making this policy clearer on my website and social media that my work has an automatic copyright.. It is never permissible to reprint, duplicate, copy or reproduce any of my paintings, prints, images on my website or Facebook, or photos you may have taken of my artwork or my paintings in any form for any reason without my express permission. To do so is quite honestly....dishonest and against the law.

If you are interested in copies I will gladly sell you one created on my wide format printer and sign and date it. All you have to do is contact me.

Thank you,

DelilahYoung
